Toon van Gramberen talks with Tim Behren about the making of the cross-generational play “Carrying Fathers”. It is about ageing bodies, about touching and faced challenges in working with non-professionals, as well as about the intertwining of family and professional contexts. He talks about personal experiences with his father during the creation and speaks about the process of conception and directing with Hanna Mampuys. Relationships come alive in the stage context, and they can be the starting point of artistic processes. As in this project, in which the personal bonds between fathers and sons are the point of reference. Toon Van Gramberen is interested in the affectionate touch between adults, specifically that between fathers and sons. A subject that is often occupied by taboos and therefore also opens up a space for intimacy and unspoken questions during the creation of the play.
