The initiative ‚Feminist Perspectives in Contemporary Circus‘ was founded in the summer of 2021 with the aim of discussing discriminatory and sexist mechanisms in the German circus scene and creating a framework to counteract them. Invited as part of the CircusDanceFestival’s residency program, protagonists of the scene met for an initial one-week summary.
In this year’s small-format meeting during the festival, there will be lectures by selected speakers as well as group discussions. Circus is an art form that has the potential to be an inclusive space for everyone. But so far, we are still a long way from this ideal. It needs more attention and a willingness to effect change towards inclusion, respect and sensitivity.
