The CircusDanceFestival Cologne 2022 opens with selected circus-miniatures that show contemporary forms at the interface with visual and fine arts. The opening raises those fundamental questions, which run through the entire circus and dance program as a theme: What relationship do bodies and objects have - and how do space and architecture affect human communication? Perspectives on the political body are continued in the evening performance program of the festival.
In "CHINA SERIES", an installation work by the young Swiss artist Julian Vogel, you can see what is transformed from festival to festival and redesigned for individual spaces. Here in Cologne, his sculptural objects are shown in conjunction with machine-driven treadmills and video works inside a circus tent. In this context, they offer an original commentary on the change and dissolution of existing circus forms. Jörg Müller has been working as an object manipulator in this field for several decades and shows two of his performance miniatures, which have become contemporary circus classics and are as poetic as they are timeless: "Mobile" and "Noustube" question supposed hierarchies between bodies and objects in an unusual way and playfully incorporate the elements of air and water.
