An ARTE film by Serge Bromberg & Eric Lange

Growing up as a child in one of London's poorest suburbs, Charlie Chaplin became world-famous within 25 years. Previously unreleased international archive footage and recently restored versions of his first films illustrate the fantastic adventure of a man who became immortal in his role as a tramp.

Charlie Chaplin's lightning career to international stardom was not only due to his talent as an actor and filmmaker, but also to the fortunate coincidence that the history of cinema and the entire world changed radically at the beginning of his career. How did the boy who grew up in one of London's poorest neighbourhoods manage to become an icon in just a few years? At the time, cinema had only just emerged from its infancy and had to emancipate itself from music halls and vaudeville in order to arrive in the modern age and become an art genre in its own right within a very short space of time. The young discipline blossomed from a fairground attraction into a powerful industry that generated significant fortunes and helped actors to great fame overnight. The documentary by Serge Bromberg and Eric Lange depicts the success story of Charlie Chaplin, whose silhouette with bowler hat, cane and oversized shoes still stands for some of the most beautiful, moving and imaginative moments in cinema today. This documentary focuses on the crucial years of his life, which shaped his entire career from the very beginning to his last films. As the 20th century, heralded by progress and innocence, lurched towards the chaos of the First World War, Chaplin revolutionised cinema in a matter of months - and conquered the world in his own way, as a tramp and a gentleman.

2014 marked the 100th anniversary of Charlie Chaplin's first film and his character of the tramp. That is why this documentary film is dedicated not only to Chaplin's well-known cinema successes, but above all to discovering the little-known films from the first three years of his career. CHARLIE CHAPLIN, HOW IT ALL BEGAN promises cinema pleasure at its very best, as the restoration of Chaplin's early work revealed that these were already true masterpieces.
