CLOWN*ESSES shows the lives of contemporary feminist clowns who turn the world upside down beyond learned structures. The clown*esses Gözde and Lokke emancipate themselves from patriarchal structures and representations in search of their very own homeland. Between the stage and everyday life, they find their constant in transformation and enter into a dialogue with themselves and the world. An underestimated theatrical art becomes a niche of feminism. A documentary between reality and magic.
The film is framed by a live performance by the portrayed Lokke Wurm. Born once, already died 1000 deaths. With humour and precision, Wurm presents stories about forgotten heroes and interprets well-known songs that suddenly take on a new meaning. Between tradition and transition, dey uses classic forms of representation and fills them with queer feminist content.
The following discussion with the director Jana Rothe is hosted bei the Initiative Feminist Circus.
