Thematic Parcours: Circus On Screen

What are you in the mood for? To help you navigate the festival's many performances and events, we suggest thematic itineraries. These run like different paths through the entire program and help you set your own focus when visiting the festival. Or you can just go with the flow. Either way: See you soon in the city, in the circus tent or at the outdoor stages on the festival grounds by the Rhine!

What does circus look like on the big screen? The CircusDanceFestival shows circus from unusual cinematic perspectives. In collaboration with other international film, dance and circus festivals, the Circus & Film program is dedicated to experimental circus short films with new narrative styles. A seven-member jury reviewed the submissions to the worldwide open call. After its premiere in Cologne, the short film program will tour Europe with the network's partners.
Our ARTE CINEMA will show the documentary film ‘Der Schwarm’ (The Swarm), which accompanies the XY company during rehearsals shortly before a breathtaking premiere.

In a sun-drenched forest, five people form an arch by standing on each other’s shoulders.
A little boy looks happily at the hands of a person holding juggling balls
A vehicle equipped with furniture and a washing machine, with a seesaw perched high above it, on which a man is balancing on the right. In the background are tracks and scrap metal.
A red classic car viewed from the front, with three people sitting behind the windshield
An elegant room with a long table stretching across the width of the picture. People are lying, standing, and sitting at and on it; everything looks chaotic.
A black-and-white photo in the style of the famous Beatles album cover. Except instead of people, it’s juggling clubs crossing the crosswalk.
A woman in a white ruffled outfit hangs from a vertical hammock and stretches toward the sun shining through the windows in the background
Against a dark background, many performers stand on a stage. Two of them are thrown into the air.
