The circus and the tent are inextricably linked, according to common perceptions. But circus arts have not always been and are not still today exclusively housed in tents. LATIBUL, for example, is currently planning to build a permanent, sustainable building for theater and circus. Permanent circus buildings existed much earlier in Cologne: around 1880, a building was erected on Neumarkt that could accommodate up to 3,000 spectators and had both a circus ring and a frontal stage. The Neumarkt area used to be a avenue for horse shows, and today it is used, among other things, as a venue for Circus Roncalli with its chapiteau.
Another circus building was opened in 1947 with the Williamsbau on Aachener Weiher. However, the buildings were not only used for circus performances but were also a venue for a wide range of events and programs: theater performances, concerts, sporting events, carnival celebrations and meetings of clubs, associations and political parties. Today, the buildings have fallen into oblivion and little or nothing remains to remind us of them at their locations. Theater and dance historians Johanna Hilari and Mirjam Hildbrand have combed through boxes and folders in archives and searched antique bookshops for old publications on the architecture. As part of the CircusDanceFestival, they invite you to join them on a guided walk to the two former venues.
